Annual Speech Night and Prize Giving

On the final evening of the school year, the College community gathered for our annual Speech Night, with the theme of Connection setting the tone for an evening of celebration, reflection and unity.

The spirit of connection was woven throughout the program, as students and staff showcased their talents through on-stage performances and engaging media presentations.

Speech Night provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strength of our community and to formally acknowledge the many academic, cultural and sporting achievements attained throughout the year. The evening was a testament to the collective effort, commitment and excellence that exists across all areas of College life.

In his address, Acting College Principal Mr Byrne, shared an overview of the College’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, offering the community a glimpse of the vision and priorities that will guide St Patrick’s College into the future, ahead of its official launch early next year.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Luceat Award to Geoffrey Watson SC (’77), who accepted the honour with his trademark humility. A highly respected Australian barrister specialising in public and constitutional law, Mr Watson is widely recognised for his leadership in legal education and reform, as well as his long-standing pro bono advocacy, particularly in defence of the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.

In his address, Mr Watson spoke warmly of his time at St Patrick’s College and the educators who shaped his journey, including Christian Brothers Br Crichton, Br Killian, Br Dynes and Br Berg, along with lay teachers Ted Healey and Michael Robson. He reflected on the strong foundation they provided, which helped guide him towards a career in law. Mr Watson also shared how, after many years of supporting justice issues in a passive way, a defining moment in 2010, when 50 asylum seekers drowned, moved him to take meaningful action. His message to students was both powerful and inspiring: you are never too young to make a difference.

The evening concluded with a moving medley of Lean on Me and Absolutely Everybody, arranged and orchestrated by Dr David Taylor. Students and staff filled the stage in a powerful display of unity and song, before the entire community joined together to sing the College anthem with pride and gusto. It was a fitting finale to a night defined by connection.

Once again, Speech Night was a celebration of all who make up our vibrant St Patrick’s College community.
