HSIE A

The HSIE A Department aims to develop students into informed, critical thinkers who understand how the past shapes the world they live in.

Through engaging programs aligned with the NESA syllabuses in Ancient History, Modern History, History Extension, and Legal Studies, students build strong knowledge, analytical skills, and active citizenship.

In Stage 4 (Years 7–8), students explore the ancient and medieval worlds and develop foundational historical skills. They learn to question evidence, interpret perspectives, and understand how societies change over time.

In Stage 5 (Years 9–10), students deepen their understanding of the modern world by studying major events such as World War I and II, the Holocaust, the Civil Rights Movement, and changes in Indigenous rights in Australia. They analyse historical sources with increasing sophistication and evaluate differing interpretations.

In Stage 6 (Years 11–12), HSIE A offers Ancient History, Modern History, Extension History, and Legal Studies. In Ancient History, students investigate ancient societies, using archaeological and written evidence. In Modern History, students explore the ideas, movements, people, and events that have shaped the modern world. Extension History examines how history’s construction, presentation and interpretation can change over time. Whilst in Legal Studies, students learn how the law functions in society and how legal systems respond to contemporary issues.
