St Patrick's College Strathfield

Year 10 Visual Arts Residency

14/03/2019

On Sunday 10 March, Year 10 Photography and Digital Media students participated in an overnight residency on Cockatoo Island.

The aim of the experience was for students to engage in photographic workshops and develop a sustained approach to their own photographic making. Students used the historic and industrial landscape as stimulus for their study into documentary photography focussing specifically on Forgotten Places. Students were given the brief, to find beauty in the large, abandoned and decaying structures of Cockatoo Island. Each student’s record of the experience will be published in their own photographic journal.

The extended time outside of the classroom offered students the chance to further explore their knowledge and functions of the DSLR camera; including how aperture, shutter speed and ISO can be manipulated manually to achieve a desired image. During the evening students participated in night workshops experimenting with capturing light through long exposure and the manipulation of spot lighting.
