Mathematics
The Mathematics Faculty is a dynamic department

Teacher and Student

committed to the growth of the whole person, socially, emotionally and intellectually. It acknowledges the diversity of the backgrounds and abilities of the students and endeavours to teach Mathematics in a way that stretches the capabilities of each student and enables them to maximise their potential.

Students are provided with opportunities to apply their mathematics in situations that interest them. Teachers provide students with familiar and unfamiliar situations that require them to select and interpret information, choose the appropriate mathematical method, arrive at a solution and then make a decision upon reflection. A variety of teaching strategies are employed to develop concepts and enhance students’ learning of Mathematics. Lessons may involve investigations, discovery learning and practical work.

Students who are identified as having special abilities in Mathematics are involved in enrichment/extension groups. These groups involve activities such as the Mathematics Challenge, the Newton Series (Year 6), the Dirichlet Series (Year 7) the Euler Series (Year 8), the Noether and Gauss Series (Year 9) and the Polya Series (Year 10). The students are also encouraged to become involved in the Mathematical Olympiad. The progress of these students is monitored by an appointed member of staff.
