Rugby

The first thirty six years of the College’s proud history saw St Patrick's College, Strathfield a dominant force in Rugby League, namely the Metropolitan Catholic College’s (MCC) Competition.

In 1965 the College officially started playing Rugby. Initially

no fewer than twenty-five teams represented St Patrick’s and this strong representation continues as SPC Rugby remains a dominant force in the Independent Sporting Association (ISA) of which it is a full member.

St Patrick’s boasts many outstanding footballers in its forty year history of playing rugby. John Ballesty toured with the 1968-69 Wallabies to New Zealand, the United Kingdom and South Africa, whilst a more recent Wallaby hooker, Michael Foley, is currently being tipped to assume a major coaching role with the Wallabies for the upcoming international season. St Patrick’s has had no fewer than 7 Australian School Boy representatives whilst also producing generous numbers of ISA, and New South Wales Schools representatives. Current representatives in the Super 14 competition are Chris Siale (Class of 1999) who is a contracted player for the NSW Waratah’s, and Chris O’Young (Class of 1998) a capped Waratah who is currently playing for the Western Force in their inaugural year. Both Chris’ are supportive Old Boys who willingly and generously dedicate time to the current students whenever possible. More evidence of the success of the College’s rugby programme is evident through the number of Old Boys playing in the Shute Shield, the local Sydney First Grade Competition, and in the (Sydney) Suburban Cup for St Patrick’s Old Boys’ Rugby Club.

Season 2005 saw St Patrick’s retain the ISA First Division Shield which it has done for the last 6 seasons, ever since the Schools Competition Shield has existed. Details of 2005 are listed below. Season 2006 will see St Patrick’s field 25 teams, more than 460 boys, in its pursuit of the First XV championship and the ISA championship. The First XV (ISA) championship was last won by St Patrick’s in 2003 and the Waratah Shield in 1996.

A sense of fair play, spirited and enthusiastic competition are central to St Patrick’s Rugby. Capably supported by a competent and dedicated team of coaches and parents who value enjoyment and ‘the contest’ through all our seasonal fixtures. Details of 2006 games, both home and away are also listed below.
