In keeping with a philosophy of a balanced education, the College has, for many years, made significant resources available for boys to experience music instruction and performance. The Duffy Music Centre is the learning and performance centre at the college. In excess of 350 boys have private tuition during school hours on a wide variety of instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, bass guitar, guitar, violin, violoncello, double bass, voice and all areas of percussion. The school also provides private tuition in music technology.
23 tutors teach individual lessons during school hours. Boys are permitted to leave class for a thirty minute lesson each week.
There are a number of ensembles available and they are outlined below.
The St. Patrick's College Senior Concert Band
This band is for boys who have a standard of Grade 3 AMEB or higher, who play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. During the year it performs at school assemblies and ceremonies. Externally the band performs with great success at national and state band championships, band festivals and eisteddfods. The repertoire includes a wide variety of styles from original works written for concert band to classical, popular and hit song arrangements. In 2005 the Senior Concert Band won the NSW State Junior C Grade Concert Band Championship.

Blue, Black, Gold Big Band
The St. Patrick's College Big Band is an extension group for boys who are members of the Concert Band programme. The group plays a wide range of repertoire ranging from 1940s Swing through to modern arrangements of Rock, Blues and Vocal numbers. The Big Band is one of college’s premier ensembles, and the performance expectations of the boys who are selected for this ensemble are high.
The Junior Concert Band
The Junior Concert Band consists of Woodwind, Brass, Percussion students from Year 5 and 6. This band is mainly for beginner to intermediate level music students and the repertoire ranges from short well-known original and classical works to popular and jazz standards. The Junior Concert Band performs at college assemblies as well as band festivals and eisteddfods.
The College String Orchestra
St. Patrick's College String Orchestra consists of boys, with a Grade 3 AMEB or higher standard of instrumental skill who play violin, viola, violoncello or double bass. The orchestra performs at college assemblies. Externally the orchestra performs at local festivals and eisteddfods. The repertoire includes many well known classical works.
Intermediate Jazz Ensemble
The intermediate jazz ensemble is currently in its fourth year. These young musicians and are invited to play in functions outside of school, both individually and as a band. Members from the band recently played in the “CasPA” Show Band’.
Jazz Ensemble
The ensemble provides students with the opportunity to develop advanced use of harmony, improvisation and the complex rhythms associated with jazz. This group performs at various eisteddfods and festivals as well as local fairs.
Year 10 Jazz Ensemble
The ensemble comprises two guitars, piano, bass, drums and trumpet. The band was originally formed to facilitate the further development of elective students and to introduce the young musicians to jazz. The ensemble provides many challenges – technically, harmonically and rhythmically.
Year 7/8 Guitar Ensemble
The 7/8 guitar ensemble provides a good preparation for boys interested in taking music as an elective subject in the future. The group has developed a repertoire of various musical styles to broaden their individual talent and skills.
Year 5/6 Guitar Ensemble
The main function of this group is to introduce boys to group playing. As an added benefit to individual tuition this ensemble develops ensemble performance skills.
