  • Presented directly to students by individual teachers for exceptional effort, behaviour, application or achievement beyond the ordinary expectations of the individual student for a variety of activities/ situations
  • Presented to the student at a Year assembly by the Year Master/Junior School Pastoral Care Coordinator ordinarily following the receipt of four merit slips
  • Presented to the student at a College assembly by the Headmaster ordinarily following the receipt of four merit awards

  • Presented to Senior students by individual teachers
  • Presented to the student at a College assembly in a folder by the Headmaster ordinarily following the receipt of six recommendations for a Letter of Commendation

THE LEVEL SYSTEM

Base Level

Reasons for being placed on this level:

  • all students are placed on this level when they are enrolled at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield
  • students on this level:
  • co-operate with others
  • respect  the rights of others

                            -     display positive attitudes      

What happens to students placed on this level:

  • students maintain cordial, productive relationships and continue to apply themselves determinedly and to the best of their ability

 


Level One

Reasons for being placed on this level:

  • teachers have indicated areas of concern, regarding behaviour, application or attitude, it has been left up to the student to do something and no improvement has occurred
  • Specific situations such as:

- the receipt of a number of demerit slips              - continuous teasing

- persistent failure to complete work       

- failure to attend to co-curricular or

extra-curricular commitments

- persistent lack of punctuality    

- not attending a detention

What happens to students placed on this level:

  • the student’s parents are informed through a Level One Student Management letter
  • the student is required to attend, as a minimum, one College detention
  • the student is required to commence a Level One monitoring report
  • the referring teacher speaks with the student about his actions and the consequences of progression to Level 2

 

Level Two

Reasons for being placed on this level:

  • no improvement in behaviour, application or attitude after the completion of a Level One monitoring report
  • the student continues to ignore the rights of other people in the school or has repeatedly not shown interest in looking after his own education
  • specific situations such as:

- partial truancy

- bullying

- damaging property                    

- repeated failure to attend a detention

What happens to students placed on this level:

  • the student’s parents are informed through a Level Two Student Management letter
  • the student is required to attend, as a minimum, two College detentions
  • the student is required to commence a Level Two monitoring report
  • the student will be required to attend a meeting with a member of the College’s middle management and his parents may also be required to attend
  • the student may not be permitted to attend school functions such as dances, excursions etc. for a period of time

Level Three

Reasons for being placed on this level:

  • no improvement in behaviour, application or attitude after the completion of a Level Two monitoring report
  • the student has ignored the people who have tried to help
  • specific situations such as:          

- smoking

              - vandalism

              - stealing

              - truancy            

What happens to students placed on this level:

  • the student may be suspended
  • the student’s parents will ordinarily be required to attend the College for an interview with a member of the Executive
  • the student is required to attend, as a minimum, a weekend detention
  • the student is required to commence a Level Three monitoring report
  • the student will not be permitted to attend school functions such as dances, excursions for a period of time

 

 

 

Level Four

Reasons for being placed on this level:

  • the student has definitely indicated that he does not want to improve or fit in with others at the College
  • specific misbehaviour such as:

- using or possessing alcohol or other        drugs

              - any breach of sufficient gravity as                                                    determined by the College

What happens to students placed on this level:

  • the student will be suspended
  • the student and his parents will be required to attend an interview with the Headmaster or Deputy Headmaster to discuss continuing enrolment at the College

 

 

 

Conditional Enrolment

Reasons for being placed on conditional enrolment:

  • one particularly serious incident in which a student was involved
  • a culmination of a series of previous unsuccessful attempts to improve the application and/or behaviour of the student
  • concern about the suitability of a student returning to the College
  • any other reason deemed justifiable by the Headmaster

 

What happens to students placed on conditional enrolment:

  • the student will be given a period of time to address the areas of concern
  • ongoing careful monitoring of the student occurs
  • a Progress Report will be generated during and just prior to the expiry of the conditional enrolment and a decision made regarding continuing enrolment

DEMERITS

Reasons for receiving a demerit slip:

 

  • satisfactory behaviour, application and attitude is not evident
  • specific instances of misbehaviour or lack of application such as:

              -  classroom disruption

              -  littering

              -  inappropriate dress/uniform

              -  lack of courtesy

              -  unsportsmanlike behaviour

              -  failure to complete work

              -  teasing

What happens to students who receive a demerit slip:

  • the teacher issues a demerit slip to the student who takes it home to be signed by his parents
  • the teacher explains the reason for the demerit and the consequences of further demerits, such as progression to Level 1
  • a student who receives four demerit slips may be placed on a Level 1 monitoring report and may receive a College detention

Holiday Community Service

Reasons for this detention:

For singular matters of a less serious nature or due to the persistence of a problem following intermediary steps,  a student may be placed on a detention for up to one hour duration.

This detention is notified on a demerit slip.  A student placed on a detention has an obligation to attend that detention and to ensure that it does not conflict with other College commitments they may have on the day.

Reasons for this detention:

For singular matters of a serious nature or for students placed on Level One or Level Two or following the issue of a fourth demerit or due to the persistence of a problem following a teacher/faculty/year detention.

The College detention operates at the following times:

  • 3.30 pm - 5.00 pm Monday (Secondary)
  • 3.15 pm - 4.15 pm  Friday (Junior School)

A student placed on a College detention has an obligation to attend that detention which takes precedence over any other commitment.

Reasons for this detention:

For singular matters of a very serious nature or for students placed on Level Three or Level Four or following three College detentions.  The weekend detention operates between 9.00 am and 12 noon on a Saturday morning.  A student placed on a weekend detention has an obligation to attend that detention which takes precedence over any other commitment.

Reasons for this detention:

For singular matters of the most serious nature or following two weekend detentions or for students suspended from the College.  The holiday community service operates between 9.00 am and 3.00 pm on a nominated day in the school holidays.  A student placed on holiday community service has an obligation to attend this detention which takes precedence over any other commitment.
